Porto/Post/Doc 2023: InFocus Maria Elorza

by Porto/Post/Doc / 13 09 2023

It was in 2018, as part of a Carte Blanche to Zinebi festival, that Porto/Post/Doc had its first contact with the work of Basque director Maria Elorza (Vitoria-Gasteiz, 1988). Maria Elorza studied Audiovisual Communication at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona and took a Master's degree in Research and Creation in Art at the University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU). Since 2011, she has been combining her work as a director with participation in different projects related to the world of documentary film. Her work looks at everyday life, touching on her life, her family, her friends, collecting fragments of 'little things' that quickly become huge reflections on life. She co-directed, among others, the "audiovisual dictionary" Irudi mintzatuen hiztegi poetikoa (2013, Best Basque Screenplay Award at Zinebi) and the compendium of video posters Agosto sin ti (2014, selected for festivals such as Alcances and Filmadrid). Also in 2014, she took part in the Zinebi Festival's Zinergentziak programme, as part of which she directed the collective documentary Errautsak.

This focus compiles her work under her own name and the films she made with Maider Fernandez Iriarte, under the name Las Chicas de Paisak. In its national premiere, and also as part of the festival's International Competition, PPD will premiere her first feature film, A los libros y a las mujeres canto, an ode to the magnificent power of literature and the role of women in its civilisational journey.
