Sergei Loznitsa's return to Porto/Post/Doc (after The Event, in 2015; Donbass, in 2018 and Babi Yar. Context, in the past) is made with a symphonic essay, entirely made up of archive footage, which adapts the book of the same name by W.G. Sebald, written in 1999, where the author examines the perception and understanding of the holocaust through post-war European literature. A film that asks us a question (which is equally valid for today): is it morally acceptable to use the civilian population as a weapon of war?
The Natural History of Destruction premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022.
