Costantino (Gavino Ledda, celebrated author of the autobiographical book "Padre Padrone", brought to the screen by the Taviani brothers), soaked to the bone, lets himself sink into the hayloft like old wood tossed onto the beach by a stormy sea. The torrential rain has just extinguished the fire that in a single night devastated Assandira, a farmhouse deep in the Sardinian forest. But the rain has not placated the pain and remorse for the death of her son, lost in the flames. Assandira is the most ambitious, complex and well-finished film by Salvatore Mereu, a Sardinian director who had already proved his talent for anthropological observation in his previous films.
