Film experience conceived by Jean Rouch and sociologist Edgar Morin in 1960, Chronique d'un été is an inescapable film in the history of cinema and of the social transformations lived in France during those years: the Algerian War and the reinvention of France as nation. Complex object, with several layers, this film seems to want to establish an archeology and to revisit fundamental moments of the history of the cinema in its approaches to the "truth": the concept of the symphonies of the cities of the late twenties; the neorealist mode of production, using real scenarios and characters; the metalanguage of modern cinema, assuming the device in all its subjectivity; and the utopia of an action-oriented civic film.  (Paulo Cunha)
