In Les Sauters we testify the daily life on the Gourougou hill, a border region in between Morocco and the Spanish city of Melilla, occupied by African migrants who intend to run to Europe. The city horizon is always at view and contrasts to this place that we can describe as a jungle of tents and garbage. This is probably the place most close to a purgatory that we have ever seen. This little territory is mainly inhabited by very young men, and surrounded by soldiers from both sides. Succeeding in the nearly impossible mission of crossing to the other side of the high and guarded fortifications means a chance to get to European soil. Many are stuck in this zone for more than a year: and that’s the case of Abou Bakar Sidibé from Mali, that had been already standing there for 14 months before taking the reins of the cinematography of this project. Director and leading figure in the film of his own escape, he creates images and testimonies that give us a closer and more human look over the migration crisis.  (AM)
