After its presentation at Porto/Post/Doc, “To Our Friends”, by Adrián Orr, arrives in Portuguese cinemas on 25 June, distributed by Cinetoscópio. In Porto, the film will have a special screening at Cinema Trindade on 30 June, at 9:30 pm, with the presence of the director and João Salaviza, executive producer.
Presented at Porto/Post/Doc as part of Mostra Espanha 2024, the film now continues its journey with Portuguese audiences after a significant international festival circulation. World-premiered at Visions du Réel in 2024, it was also screened at festivals such as the UNAM International Film Festival (FICUNAM), Doclisboa, International Film Festival, Valladolid International Film Festival, Montreal International Documentary Festival, São Paulo International Film Festival and Las Palmas Film Festival. In Montreal, it received the Special Jury Prize for International Feature.
Filmed over four years, “To Our Friends” follows Sara Toledo, a young woman from the working-class outskirts of Madrid, at the moment of transition between adolescence and adulthood. As she enters university to study theatre, Sara discovers new relationships and possibilities, while gradually distancing herself from the group of friends with whom she grew up. Between her community of origin and the artistic world she begins to inhabit, the film builds an intimate portrait of friendship, social class, identity and transformation.
Adrián Orr develops here a hybrid approach between documentary and fiction, continuing the work initiated in “Niñato”. The protagonist’s growth is followed in real time, allowing the film to register changes in bodies, bonds and expectations without relying on a conventional dramatic structure. Lived experience, performance and fictional construction intersect in a filmic device attentive to forms of individual reinvention in the face of the emotional and social transformations of youth.
The film opens in several cinemas across the country, including Cinema Fernando Lopes, in Lisbon, Cinema Trindade and Cinemas NOS Alameda Shop & Spot, in Porto, Castello Lopes W Shopping, in Santarém, Castello Lopes TorreShopping, in Torres Novas, and Castello Lopes Espaço Guimarães, in Guimarães.
The special screening on 30 June at Cinema Trindade will be an opportunity to revisit the film in Porto and deepen the dialogue with Adrián Orr and João Salaviza, reinforcing the importance of film circulation as a space of encounter between films, authors, festivals and audiences.
