Between January 15 and February 26, the Batalha Centro de Cinema, in collaboration with the Porto/Post/Doc: Film & Media Festival, will present a retrospective dedicated to the Italian filmmaker Alice Rohrwacher. Widely regarded as a key figure in contemporary cinema, Rohrwacher has captivated audiences and critics alike with a filmography that blends neorealism and magical realism, exploring themes such as childhood, ancestry, and the relationship between rural and modern life.
An admirer of Luis Buñuel and Roberto Rossellini, Alice Rohrwacher's films navigate the boundaries between history and myth. In her works, characters often find refuge in imagination and tradition, facing the harshness of the world. Her dreamlike, almost mythical aesthetic results from regular collaborations with renowned professionals, including Helène Louvart (cinematography), Emita Frigato (art direction), Loredana Buscemi (costume design), and Alba Rohrwacher, widely acclaimed as one of the greatest actresses of her generation.
With a career spanning just over a decade, Rohrwacher has already garnered notable accolades, including the Grand Prix for Le meraviglie, the Best Screenplay Award for Lazzaro felice, and two Palme d’Or nominations, for Lazzaro felice and La chimera, at the Cannes Film Festival. Additionally, Rohrwacher received an Academy Award nomination for Best Live Action Short Film for Le pupille.
This retrospective at Batalha features all of the filmmaker’s feature films, as well as a selection of short fiction, hybrid, and documentary films. The program spans works from her acclaimed Corpo celeste (2011) to her most recent La chimera (2023), also showcasing collaborations such as Omelia contadina and Allegorie Citadine, co-directed by Alice Rohrwacher and JR.
