In this edition of Porto/Post/Doc, the Before and After program invites us to reflect on European cinema and its influence on the lives of those who follow it. The project brings together four programmers connected to the foundation of Curtas Vila do Conde – Nuno Rodrigues, Miguel Dias, Rui Maia, Dario Oliveira, and Luís Urbano – who each share some of the films that have deeply marked them.
This eclectic selection begins with Nuno Rodrigues’ tribute to Rainer Werner Fassbinder and his impact on European cinema. Miguel Dias brings to the screen the rebellious spirit of Jean Vigo and the narrative strength of Straub and Huillet, while Rui Maia revisits the dreamlike and satirical world of Fellini, where we explore the nuances of Latin culture. Dario Oliveira, in turn, selects the documentary I am not everything I want to be by Klára Tasovská, a visual and sensory journey through memories and changes in Cold War Europe. Finally, Luís Urbano showcases the unique magic of Eugène Green, whose Le Monde Vivant transports us to a fairytale world where the viewer’s imagination is constantly challenged.
This program celebrates European cinema and the impact of these works on the personal and cultural development of the programmers. More than just screenings, Before and After is a cinematic experience that pays homage to the past and present, bringing together films that continue to inspire and challenge audiences.
