Where are our Storytellers? is the title of the thematic programme that will mark the tenth edition of Porto/Post/Doc. A list of eight films that invite us to rediscover central figures in directing and acting, united by the desire to make cinemas a point of reflection on the artistic, cultural and political issues that inevitably mark the temporality and existence of these films. Eight proposals to cross cultures, from Asia to America, and explore the different ways of telling a story.
From the generations lost at war in Beirut, revisited in Jocelyne Saab's poetic and journalistic triptych; to the stories of visionary authors who had to emigrate to find their place as underground artists, such as Nam June Paik and Jonas Mekas. From the road movie Candy Mountain - a fiction by Robert Frank featuring Joe Strummer and Tom Waits; to the discovery of the multifaceted universe of the Japanese writer Yukio Mishima. Moving on to Radical Dreamer, an intimate and complicit look at the career of one of the most complex and brilliant film writers and thinkers of our time: Werner Herzog.
From the room of the cinema, we propose these films as "agitators" for the public, so that viewers are able to judge, challenge and discuss their surroundings. We propose to create the conditions for building a dialogue where individual and collective stories can be shared, as a way of combating the oblivion that the infestation of fake news and the various forms of silencing have imposed. Alongside the film programme, Where Are Our Storytellers? will also include a series of talks (Fórum do Real).
Porto/Post/Doc returns to Porto between 17 and 25 November. Already announced was the Critics Lab, a mentoring programme for film writers, which aims to support the development of a new generation of emerging film critics and authors.
More information about this year's programme will be announced in the coming weeks.
