In the women's prison in Sliven, Bulgaria, 17 babies live among the corridors and cells where their mothers are serving sentences. Women who arrived pregnant and gave birth during their imprisonment recall the dehumanising treatment they endured and their abandonment by husbands, society, and the regime. Amid crying babies, the film asks what can reach the senses of a child born inside a prison.
Binka Zhelyazkova was a pioneer of Bulgarian cinema and one of its most dissident voices. The first woman to direct a feature film in the country, she built a body of work shaped by political critique, censorship and a distinctive view of women’s lives.
