Three sisters, the youngest with 8, the oldest with 16, deal with grief: their mother committed suicide (a victim of bipolar disorder). Director Jenifer Malmqvist first follows the shock of this loss and then, a decade later, when they are all adults, the traumatic echoes of this experience. Daughters is a film of touching empathy, which always seeks the right position in relation to the suffering of others. A delicate portrait of grief, of love between sisters and of the way in which memory recreates and mystifies the past in order to better deal with it.
Daughters premiered at the CPH:DOX festival and had its international premiere at Visions du Réel.
