Legend has it that khat, a stimulant plant, was found by Sufi imams in search of eternity. Inspired by this myth, Beshir’s debut takes us on a spiritual journey through the Harar region (where the director was born), immersing us in the religious rituals surrounding the plant and its status as the most lucrative crop in Ethiopia. Shot in striking black and white, Faya Dayi is a mesmerising portrait of the youth of her country, caught between migration and hallucination.
