Starting today, at Batalha - Centro de Cinema, the Oásis program proposes a set of films that explore the imaginary of Summer. The program will screen: Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing; La idea de um lago by Milagros Mumenthaler; Jazz on a Summer's Day by Bert Stern; and Grease by Randal Kleiser. Also to be shown, on the 22nd of July, a session of short films that brings together all kinds of cinematographic games, animation techniques and possibilities for self-expression in cinema. This session, titled Party Forever, includes the films: Labor of Love by Sylvia Schedelbauer; Fiesta Forever by Jorge Jácome; Milk of Amnesia by Jeff Scher; Queen by Kathryn Elkin and Curses by Jodie Mack.
We all know that summer is more than just the time for vacations and warm weather. It seems to create a certain kind of frame for what is possible to happen. Dreamily, everyday life interrupts its duties, the pace slows down, and a sense of freedom inspires what moves under the sunny sky. People meet (or can meet) new people, fall in love (or can fall in love), travel (or can travel) to places and be fascinated by new landscapes they never dreamed of. Or, on the contrary, they may get bored on a family vacation in the longest hours of their lives. The notion of time changes. This suspension brings extended days and nights that never end. People seem to be able to embrace candor more easily, but it may just be the vague promise of being someone else for a while, of savoring happiness through brief glimpses of beauty. Summer has fueled many songs and movies. Oasis brings together just a few of them.
