PPD proposes a discussion on the social and climatic urgencies

by Porto/Post/Doc / 27 07 2021

The eighth edition of Porto/Post/Doc takes place between November 20th and 30th. The festival maintains the competitive and programmatic structure of recent years, integrating national and international works of recent production, musical documentaries, special programs curated by directors close to its universe and thematic programs. In the urgency to look at the world around us, more than a year after the pandemic appeared, the central theme for the 2021 edition follows the challenge Ideas to Postpone the End of the World. Compiling short and feature films, the central programme brings climate, social, political and ideological issues to the debate table. This will also be the guiding theme of the Forum of the Real, which will integrate three panels dedicated to the themes: The Earth, moderated by journalist Raquel Ribeiro; The Community, moderated by journalist Abel Coentrão; and Freedom, moderated by journalist Ricardo Alexandre.

At a time when our lives risk becoming a nightmare, it is more important than ever to defend everyone's right to a future that includes the idea of happiness. Inspired by the book of the same name by Ailton Krenak, the programme Ideas to Postpone the End of the World is inspired by the will of the activist and indigenous thinker to find an inclusive paradigm and promote a joint and informed action of knowledge and humanism. Film by film, Ideals to Postpone the End of the World takes a guided journey through old and new perspectives on our world, alternative ideas to consumerism, desires for a reality where differences melt away and which broaden ways of thinking about human existence. Starting from the Herculean mission of giving back dignity to an entire culture ostracised by the multinationals, set in White Cube, by Renzo Martens, and culminating in the knowledge produced, today, by science and technology in Who We Were, by Marc Bauders. There is also room to rethink new urbanities and formats of community life, such as those we see in Demain, by Cyril Dion and Melanie Laurent, and Nuestra voz de tierra, memoria y futuro, by Marta Rodríguez and Jorge Silva, as well as the relationship, so questioned today, between Man and the other living beings, so well presented in Antropocene: The Human Epoch, by Jennifer Baichwall. The programme is completed with a programme of short films that includes three works by Rosa Barba (Aggregate States of Matters, Bending to Earth and Disseminate and Hold), as well as Birds In the Earth, by Marja Helander.

Porto/Post/Doc takes place between November 20 and 30 at the Teatro Municipal do Porto - Rivoli, Passos Manuel, Coliseu Porto Ageas, Casa Comum da Reitoria da Universidade Porto and Planetário do Porto - Centro Ciência Viva. Similar to what happened in 2020, the festival will also feature an extension to online, where it will be possible to view a large part of the selected films. More details about the programme will be revealed in the next months.
