With “In The Land Of Others”, Porto/Post/Doc concludes the trilogy launched in 2024 “The Movement of Peoples”, dedicated to human displacement, forms of belonging, and the tensions between territory, identity, and memory.

This third and final programme begins with a question that is both simple and difficult: what does it mean to live in a place that never fully recognises you? Other people’s country may be a foreign land, a border to be crossed, a language that excludes, a community whose face has changed, a political promise, or even a home where one is never seen as anything other than an outsider. Within the selected films displacement is not merely geographical, it’s also intimate, historical, social, and symbolic.

From “I, Captain” to “Unwelcomed”, the programme follows bodies in transit, driven by inequality, the hope of a better future, and political violence. In “All Good Countrymen”, estrangement emerges within one’s own homeland, as a rural community ceases to recognise itself under the weight of a new ideological order. In “I Am Cuba”, a nation is filmed through a foreign gaze that transforms revolution, poverty, and emancipation into images of extraordinary formal power, while also exposing deep political tensions. In “The Double Life of Véronique”, otherness shifts inward, becoming part of identity itself, as though every life carried the hidden memory of another life that might have been.

Moving between documentary, fiction, historical chronicle, political cinema, and metaphysical fable, “In The Land Of Others” approaches belonging as an inherently unstable condition. To belong means learning unfamiliar codes, negotiating one’s place, enduring suspicion, and crossing both visible and invisible borders. It also means recognising that no territory is neutral: every landscape carries histories of possession, exclusion, desire, and conflict.

As it brings this trilogy to a close, the programme offers a broad reflection on contemporary displacement. The question is not simply what it means to leave or to arrive, but what happens when someone attempts to build a life in a space shaped by others, governed by rules that precede them and often exceed them. In these films, inhabiting other people’s country means confronting the gap between the promise of belonging and the reality of an acceptance that remains, inevitably, incomplete.
